Sony Ericsson Z710i

A look at the specification sheet shows that basically the Z710i is a W710i with several features removed - for example, the Z710i only has a 64Mb memory card bundled (compared with 512Mb), it lacks the Walkman media player and fitness applications, and it comes in a more conventional housing (although it does still have external media controls). The orange coloured external display on the Walkman version has been replaced by a pretty looking blue colour 128x128 pixel panel.

Sometimes though, less is more. And the Z710i is a much more practical and sober business phone than the "Walkman" version, and it still features 10 hours talktime, an email client, personal information management tools, a web browser and RSS news reader. It still comes with a decent multimedia player and an FM radio, and of course you can always buy more memory if you want to. And as it's a quad-band phone, you can use it pretty much anywhere in the world.

The Z710i comes in two colours combinations, "Twighlight Black" and "Metallic Sand". We prefer the look of the latter, although both handsets look quite smart.

Sony Ericsson intend to sell the Z710i in Europe, the Americas, Middle East and and Africa. In addition, there will be a Z710c version available for mainland China.

Of course, not all business will want the digital camera, and we have the feeling that if Nokia were to make a handset like this, then they'd make it a Symbian smartphone. Still, the Sony Ericsson Z710i seems to be a good overall package that will appeal to business and personal customers alike.

The push email feature allows the user to have access to email accounts directly to their phone. The user can contact others using any of the messaging services provided which include multimedia messaging, enhanced messaging, text messaging, email & instant messaging. The multimedia message can incorporate sound & text with a photo, image or video clip & provide an entertaining & informative message. The text message service provides a quick text input only message which is compatible with most mobile phone users whereas a multimedia message can only be sent to a MMS compatible mobile phone user which some mobile phones do not incorporate. The instant message works like an online conversation between compatible users & is just like an instant message service that is provided on the users home or office personal computer.

The user can synchronise their contact details & calendar between their PC & Sony Ericsson Z710i & even enjoy doing this over a wireless connection using Bluetooth® technology. The phone comes with a highly useable phone book complete with contact information, calendar, calculator, stopwatch, date & time, alarm clock, timer & notes. The phone comes with a flight mode feature which allows the user to access information on their phone whilst on a flight or in other mobile phone restricted areas such as hospitals.

Sony Ericsson K810i

The K810i CyberShot phone represents everything you'd dream a camera phone would feature just a couple of years ago. A 3G phone with a 3.2 megapixel camera coupled with Xenon flash, auto-focus, red-eye reduction, and the ability to optimise brightness and contrast of a pic at the touch of a button, are all camera-specific features that people who wanted to take proper pics with their camera-phone were crying out for. And they're here now with the Sony Ericsson K810i.

The problem is, they were also here, last year, with the Sony Ericsson K800i. Disapointingly, the K810i is simply a minor upgrade to the existing K800i.

Same with the K550i (left). A more limited feature-set than the K810i reveals its more mid-range positioning, but again, nothing new to report. It does look the better of the two phones, though.

And Sony Ericsson are using the "credible" word again. According to the company, the K810i and other CyberShot phones are "credible fusions of camera and phones". And they are, too - they're camera phones that actually operate as cameras as well as they operate as phones. But that's not enough - we want the wow phones, like the glorious-looking Bravia mobile TV phone Sony Ericsson currently sell in Japan. Sony Ericsson are in danger of creating the Credible Phone as a whole new mobile phone category!

Both phones are available soon - The Sony Ericsson K810i release date is Q2 2007, while the Sony Ericsson K550i release date is Q1 2007. Hopefully Sony Ericsson will offer up something new with the wow factor at next week's 3GSM.

The K810i Cyber-shot phone is a sleek device, boasting a 3.2 megapixel camera, including auto focus and Xenon flash. Innovative new applications such as PhotoFix help to further improve the quality of your pictures, even after you have taken them. Illuminated Camera Icons to the side of the main keypad, which light up when in camera mode, allow the user to access camera menu options at the touch of a button.

”The K810i will appeal to those regularly using their mobile phone to capture quality shots while on the move. Its slender good looks belies its high specification; it’s not only a UMTS device for high-speed picture blogging, but also one of the most advanced camera phones available. When in camera mode, the Xenon flash with red eye reduction will help to achieve great picture results in low light conditions. Equally, the new Illuminated Camera Icons will allow the user to select advanced camera settings (such as picture size and self timer) by simply clicking on one of the hard keys; so there is no need to navigate into the full camera menu and risk missing that special shot.

If a photo needs some improvement after it has been taken due to poor light conditions and lack of contrast, then the new PhotoFix solution can optimise brightness and picture contrast at the touch of a button. Meanwhile, if a user is shooting a moving object (perhaps at a sporting event), then the BestPic feature will let them take nine photos in quick succession and they simply choose the best one.

Sharing your pictures is easily done with the K810i Cyber-shotTM phone thanks to a host of connectivity options. Picture blogging allows you to upload your shots to your own blog site, whilst BluetoothTM technology and USB 2.0 make it easy to share photos with friends or connect to your PC.

The K810i Cyber-shot phone is a UMTS 2100 (GSM 900/1800/1900) device available within Q2 2007. Both will be available in two stylish colours: Noble Blue and Golden Ivory.

  • Sony Ericsson V630i

A sleek and sophisticated looking 3G capable handset, the Sony Ericsson V630i features a crisp display, 2 megapixel camera and Memory Stick Micro (M2) support. With an integrated MP3 player and a 256MB M2 card included in the sales package, the V630i is a solid multimedia handset that wins plenty of points for its compact design.

It wasn't so long ago that 3G handsets were almost universally bulky, but much has changed in a short time period. The V630i measures just 102mm x 45mm x 16.9mm and weighs a mere 91g, so it's one of the smallest and lightest 3G phones currently available on the market. Despite its diminutive size, the V630i is effortless to operate and navigate thanks to a comfortable set of controls. There are two selection buttons, answer and end call keys, back and clear buttons as well as a five-way navigational pad. The pad features a very bright orange backlight, so it's easy to see in low light conditions.

The keypad is quite comfortable, although it is slightly squashed into the bottom half of the handset. We felt the keys could have been larger, as those with big fingers may struggle for accuracy when punching out text messages or when dialling. We also quite liked the aesthetic created by the external play/pause and volume controls. Like the internal keypad, they glow orange, creating quite a contrast with the grooved, matte black finish of the unit.

The V630i also has a clear and crisp TFT screen that is capable of displaying 256,000 colours. Its performance was notable for a phone this size and it displayed most Vodafone Live! content, particularly images and photos, with relative ease. The display also has a fairly good viewing angle, although it does suffer slightly in direct sunlight.

For a handset commanding this price tag, the V630i has a solid features list. There are dual cameras; a rear 2 megapixel sensor for regular photography, and a front mounted VGA sensor for video calling. The images produced are average for a camera phone, with reasonably high levels of image noise, but decent colour reproduction. They won't provide photographs suitable for print outs, but for a few happy snaps, they are capable of doing the job.

The V630i also features a dedicated music player with support for MP3, AAC, AAC+ and eAAC+ files. The music player is well laid out with menus for now playing, artist track and playlist. There is even a fully adjustable five-band equaliser in addition to four preset sound settings and shuffle and loop modes. Unfortunately, the music player is let down by the absence of a standard 3.5mm headphone jack, and the fact that no adapter is included. You have to use the bundled headphones with Sony Ericsson's proprietary jack and their quality is below average for music playback. You can store your songs on the 10MB of internal memory, or the 256MB Memory Stick Micro (M2) card, which is included in the sales package, although this is upgradeable to as much as 4GB with the purchase of a higher capacity card.

Other features of the V630i include Bluetooth, GPRS and USB connectivity (with a proprietary USB cable included). An excellent addition is the fact that the V630i is a mass storage device, which means you simply connect your phone to a PC and the expandable phone memory appears as a removable drive. There is also standard SMS, MMS and push email messaging support with T9 predictive text input.

A host of PIM functions are present and these include alarm clock, calculator, calendar, notes, stopwatch, tasks and a timer. The V630i is also capable of conference calls and includes a copy of Sony Ericsson's PC Suite software, so you can synchronise your contacts and other information to your PC. Unfortunately, Sony Ericsson has once again failed to appeal to Mac users, as the PC Suite software is restricted to PC use.

A solid battery life rounds out the package, with figures of seven hours talk time and up to 350 hours standby time according to Sony Ericsson. We found these very close the mark, charging the handset every three days on average. This figure will decrease depending on how frequently you use the phone's multimedia features, such as the MP3 player and digital camera.

    Sony Ericsson Z750i

The Sony Ericsson Z750i was announced toward the end of Q1 2007 and it marked the Japanese-Swedish company's foray into the HSDPA market. At this time, if you're thinking the Z750i looks familiar, it is. In fact, you'll be hard pressed to find any major differences between the Z750i and the earlier Z610i.

Design of the Sony Ericsson Z750i Mobile Phone

We have to admit sheepishly that we really like the stylishly designed Z750i. Part of the reason, we suspect is the Japanese "kei tai" (mobile phone) allure which has typically followed the clean and simple design philosophy.

Like the Z610i, the Z750i retains the seamless mirror-like surface with a hidden OLED screen. When activated, the screen illuminates to give the effect of a floating display on the surface. If you look at it from an angle, it appears as though the various "layers" of the screen extends into the handset, giving it depth and a three-dimensional feel. The OLED screen displays incoming message alerts and calls, music information and in idle mode, the time, battery level and signal strength.

The only cosmetic differences we find between both handsets are the Z750i's matte-plastic backing, taller spine (the part of the bottom lid that extends above the top cover), inclusion of call/end keys and the slightly different layout of the buttons.

That said, the buttons on the Z750i are easily one of the best in the market today. The alphanumeric keys are large and provide excellent tactile feedback. The rest of the control buttons are also adequately sized to provide reasonable sense-of-touch. There are three quick access music controls on the left edge of the handset. Two of these buttons double as volume keys.

The Z750i is not only aesthetically pleasing on the outside, the cascading flow of lights starting from the bottom of the keypad and ending with the lighting up of the 2.2-inch LCD screen is also a very nice finishing touch. Obviously, those with a chronic habit of wiping their handset may get deliverance with this Sony Ericsson, since the huge glossy surface requires constant cleaning.

Features of the Sony Ericsson Z750i Mobile Phone

Although the Z610i and Z750i are like peas in a pod on the outside, the latter is more advanced in terms of features. For example, the quadband Z750i is now on the GSM 850 frequency and it also offers triband HSDPA which add to its network compatibility in the US.

A little less known fact of the Z750i is that it comes with built-in A-GPS receiver. This is a little different from Nokia's N95, E90 and the 6110 Navigator which have built-in GPS chips. The Z750i relies on an assistance server such as a cell phone tower to triangulate the user's position. According to Sony Ericsson, this feature requires the telco operator to activate the A-GPS capability and, from what they understand, only Chunghwa Telecom in Taiwan has enabled this feature. They added that the A-GPS receiver can also connect to GPS satellites, although it will take a longer time to get a location fix. We tried the A-GPS feature during our review, but we never managed to triangulate our position. The way we see it? The proposition of the A-GPS here is somewhat dodgy and we recommend users to take this with a huge pinch of salt.

On the brighter side of things, Google Maps is preinstalled on the device and you can use this as a standalone app. However, not all the features are enabled and traffic information is one of them.

The Z750i features the new media interface which we've been talking about in the K850i Cyber-shot and most recently, the K630i. Media files are classified into photo, music and video and within each of these broad categories, there are additional options. For example, you can view camera images sorted by date, browse through albums and also tag photos. In music, files are sorted by artists, albums, tracks and playlists. The look of the media browser follows the one on the phone and there isn't an option to use different skins. Only one option is available in the settings and that's to switch orientation of the screen. Our guess is Sony Ericsson may introduce future software upgrades to enable the use of individual themes for the media browser. The Z750i also supports Bluetooth stereo for listening of music via our wireless earphones.

On the entertainment front, this Sony Ericsson comes with built-in FM radio which was missing in the Z610i, though it works only when a wired headset is plugged in. There are three games installed on the Z750i: Investigators, QuadraPop and Sims 2. Yes, Sims, the one that you get to play God or live the alternative life, though obviously it's a more stripped down version for mobile phones. That said, we think it's one of the most interesting games preinstalled in a handset, especially when the Z750i isn't a gaming-focused device like the Nokia N81.

Unfortunately, Sony Ericsson stuck with the 2-megapixel camera for the Z750i similar to the one on the Z610i. Even though it isn't a Cyber-shot phone, the lack of a built-in flash light and autofocus capability make it rather lacking in the digital imaging aspect. At maximum resolution, digital zoom is disabled and there isn't an option to set the resolution for videos though we can specify whether it's meant to be sent as a picture message or saved as a clip. Like the Z610i, the main camera lens is prone to dust, dirt and scratches due to it being exposed with no cover. For 3G video calls, there's a secondary shooter above the phone's LCD.

Performance of the Sony Ericsson Z750i Mobile Phone

Overall, the performance of the Z750i was nothing to shout at. While the phone was pretty responsive when opening applications etc, running multiple programs such as music playing in the background and texting a message slowed the handset's response significantly.

Picture quality was a mild disappointment. Granted that the Z750i isn't positioned as a camera-phone like its Cyber-shot counterparts, picture quality from the 2-megapixel camera was constantly marred by a watercolor effect. The lack of autofocus also contributed to numerous out-of-focus shots during our tests. At best, we'd give the Z750i's camera an average rating.

The Z750i is rated for 10 hours of talktime and slightly over 16 days on standby. With regular use of sending text messages, making phone calls and listening to music, the 930mAh Lithium-polymer battery lasted for two days tops before it had to be juiced. Audio quality was decent and we had no problems piping music to our HBH-DS980 Bluetooth stereo earphones during our review.
